Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one
–Ephesians 6:16
With an increasing emphasis on the occult evident in the society, it is easy to forget that Satan’s most effective weapons are two ancient foes- doubts and discouragement. How many Christians have been spiritually defeated by the sabotage of these two evil ambassadors?
Fear, seemed to be one of the first abnormal symptoms that the man experienced following the fall from perfect union and fellowship with God: “then the Lord God called to the man, and said to Him, Where are you? He answered, ‘I heard the sound of the garden, and I was afraid” (Genesis 3:9-10).
Since then, the very heart has known the panic and trembling that fear brings. Fear of failure. Fear of today. Fear of the future.
The only antidote for fear is trust. David, who knew the depth of fear as few people ever have, came to this conclusion as he was seized by the Philistines: “When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You” (Psalms 56:3). David did not deny His fear. He did not rationalize it or try to outman it. He admitted his fear and then affirmed his trust in the Lord.
Discouragement, sometimes you have temporary conquest but almost always eventual relapse. It all can lead to a very frustrating circle of resolve and regret. Although doubt and discouragement are strong enemies, in Ephesians 6:16 God has given you the means to resolve this problem. Firm, unwavering confidence in the Lord keeps the powers of darkness at bay. Satan is thwarted when the shield of faith is raised against him.
Doubt says, “I don’t think so.” Faith says, “God is able.” Discouragement says, “It’s hopeless.” Faith says, “With God, all things are possible.”
During these times of fear and discouragement, faith is the best tool to use. With faith, you can ask God to go before you on your troubling times. It is also the other expression of your dependence and need for God. Faith, in fact, is the highest expression of your allegiance to the Lord. When you place your faith in God, you confess your absolute trust in His personhood.
Faith is intangible. It is not so predictable. Yet faith is the unseen dynamic for Christian growth and living. It is the indispensable core of a vital spiritual existence.
Whenever you find yourself in a difficult situation, may it be a personal dilemma or a major interruption that affects you spiritually, hold on to your faith and draw near to God. When you express your faith in Christ for your particular needs or desires, you acknowledge your dependence on Him. That is what God asks you to do, just put your faith in Him because He alone is able to do great things for you. You may be in a situation where you have almost given up. Your strength is failing; your outlook is grim. Take up the shield of faith. Put the matter squarely into the Lord’s hands and believe that He is in control. When Satan attacks, the shield of faith will rout him.
