Through the Bible, God wants us to understand what He has done for us and what we are supposed to do. As a recipient of God’s grace, how are we supposed to respond to His goodness? Why and how are we supposed to walk or live?

The WHY of Our Walk. God has called us to become members of His family. We have been completely forgiven and have been given eternal life. Because of this, we are to “walk in a manner worthy” of this calling (Ephesians 4:1). The Bible tells us that we need to balance or match our conduct with our calling and “behave like children of God.” We need to realize what God has done for us and who we are in Christ. The Bible tells us that we are saved by grace and we need to respond in grace. We need to flee from temptations and not to sin. We are to walk in a manner worthy of the calling.

The HOW of Our Walk. Paul says in Ephesians 4:3 that we should walk “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing forbearance to one another in love”. The Bible says that if we want to walk worthy as God’s children, we need to develop the following character traits:

Humility. Jesus and Christianity elevated humility as the queen of all virtues. The deeper our relationship with the Lord, the more humble we will become. We see this throughout the Bible. When Moses and Isaiah had an encounter with God, they got on their knees. When the apostle Peter came to know the Lord more, he said, “Depart from me Lord, I am a sinner”. When we come to know God, we develop humility because we realize His greatness. And in order for us to live in harmony with others, we need to practice humility.

Gentleness. Jesus is our model for gentleness. He tells us in Matthew 11:29, “Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls.” Humility and gentleness go together. To be gentle means to be sensitive to people and to treat them with respect. To be gentle is to live in harmony with one another. Proverbs 15:1 says, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Patience. Ephesians 1-3 shows us the patience of God for us. How he has forgiven us. And in the same manner, we are to walk worthy and patiently.

Forbearance. If we want to show patience, we will forbear. Forbearance is not being passive. Forbearance means to bear – to lift up. We don’t get tired. God wants us to live in harmony by the practice of humility, gentleness, long suffering and forbearance. What’s the purpose of forbearance? Ephesians 4:3 says, “…being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

Now that you understand what it is to walk like Jesus or Christian walk, why not live or walk in a manner worthy of our calling? Reality tells us that no one is perfect and conflicts are inevitable. As Christians, we can resolve conflict in a loving way: by humility, gentleness, patience and forbearance. When the people of the world see Christians loving one another, God is pleased. God wants to see harmony in the church, in your family, in your marriage…And when it is seen, all the people will say, “WOW! Amazing.”
